There is something undeniably comforting about the aroma of a bakery. The warm fragrance of freshly baked bread mingling with the sweet scent of cakes, pastries, and cookies has a way of slowing life down, if only for a little while. I have always been drawn to these little havens of indulgence, where every display counter is a celebration of colour, creativity, and craftsmanship. Cakes, tarts, muffins, cookies, biscuits, parkins, pies, éclairs, cheesecakes, brownies—the list is almost endless, and each has its own personality and story to tell. Some are simple and rustic, while others are elegant works of edible art, decorated with intricate swirls of cream, glossy fruit glazes, delicate chocolate curls, or vibrant sprinkles. Every visit presents an irresistible dilemma: should one choose an old favourite or venture towards something entirely new? The sheer diversity of flavours—from rich chocolate and velvety vanilla to tangy citrus, fragrant spices, juicy berries, caramel, coffee, and nuts—ensures that there is always something to delight every palate. It is this wonderful abundance and variety that makes bakeries so enchanting, transforming an ordinary outing into a delicious little adventure that appeals not just to the taste buds but to all the senses.
When I decided to begin this food blog, I found myself wondering what should grace its opening page. After all, first impressions matter, and I wanted to start with something that reflected the simple joy of discovering good food. The answer came naturally—something sweet. Desserts have a universal charm that transcends age and culture, evoking memories of birthdays, celebrations, family gatherings, afternoon teas, and carefree moments shared with friends over coffee. Over the past several months, I have carried my camera along on many visits to bakeries and cafés around Kochi, capturing not only the tempting creations displayed behind gleaming glass counters but also the warmth and inviting atmosphere that surrounds them. Every photograph tells a small story: a perfectly frosted cupcake waiting to brighten someone's day, a flaky fruit tart glowing under soft café lights, rows of buttery cookies promising comfort with every bite, or an elegant cake patiently awaiting its place at a celebration. Through these images, I hope to preserve more than just the appearance of these baked delights—I hope to capture the happiness, anticipation, and quiet pleasure that accompany every bakery visit.
Bon Appetit!!
A large number of the photographs featured in this collection were taken at one of our favourite local destinations, Artisan Bakery Bloomsbury's at Lulu Mall in Kochi. Time and again, this charming bakery has impressed me with its remarkable selection of freshly baked treats, artistic presentation, and unwavering attention to quality. Walking into the bakery is an experience in itself. The display counters resemble miniature galleries, filled with beautifully crafted cakes, colourful macarons, delicate pastries, rustic loaves, buttery croissants, and countless other temptations that seem almost too beautiful to eat. Yet behind their attractive appearance lies the true reward—the wonderful flavours and textures that make every bite memorable. Whether stopping by for a leisurely cup of coffee accompanied by a warm muffin, selecting a cake for a family celebration, or simply treating oneself to a quiet afternoon indulgence, the experience is always satisfying. As this blog grows, I hope to explore many more cafés, bakeries, and culinary treasures across Kochi and beyond. But it feels entirely appropriate that this journey begins here, amidst these irresistible baked creations that celebrate the timeless pleasure of good food, skilled craftsmanship, and the simple happiness that a perfectly baked treat can bring.
